A quick and easy way of doing this is to put a copy of your work in an envelope and post it to yourself and maybe a couple of friends or family. Make sure that the envelope is not opened when it is received and put it away somewhere safe. If you did ever need to defend copyright, you would have a postmarked, unopened copy. There are also other more formal ways of registering your work.
