Matador can offer authors introduced to them via the Author’s Choice partnership the editing and design services outlined below. These are offered at specially discounted rates which can be viewed on the Matador website by clicking here. We have separated the processes into various options to suit the main types of work requested by authors.
Copy Editing
Checking a manuscript for grammar, sense, consistency, spelling, dialogue, continuity. The copy editor will make a manuscript (i) clear, (ii) correct, (iii) concise, (iv) comprehensible, and (v) consistent. A copy edit is carried out on an author’s manuscript, which is then returned to the author to check, amend and change as wished, prior to typesetting.
Typesetting
Option 1: Formatting an author’s text document
Working in the author’s existing text file, we can format to the correct page size, ensuring that page numbering, running headers, captions, and all formatting issues are consistent and correct. A PDF
proof is supplied to the author to check, and any corrections made to the typeset Word file. PDF output ready to print.
Option 2: Typesetting to industry standard in QuarkXPress
Importing the author’s original text file into QuarkXPress, we undertake text design and formatting as above but to a higher industry standard specification. A PDF proof is supplied to the author to check,
and any corrections made to the typeset Quark file. PDF output ready to print.
Proof Reading
Reviewing the typeset proofs and checking for any errors, including typesetting errors, spelling and formatting errors.
Cover Design
Option 1: Basic design using a finished illustration/photograph supplied by the author
Using a finished author-supplied image (either a finished illustration or photo, not a rough sketch), we design a full cover spread. This includes an initial rough design, revision and work-up into a complete
artwork spread, including blurb editing and barcode generation. Output to PDF for print.
Option 2: Original cover design from scratch
Taking the author’s ideas as a start, we offer design suggestions, sample images, a rough layout once an ideais agreed upon, revisions, proofing and output to PDF. Includes the purchase of up to 3 royalty-free images.
Option 3: Bespoke illustrated cover
We can commission an original illustration to an author’s brief using a professional illustrator; then design proof, revise and output a PDF ready for print.
All services offered will be subject to sight of an author’s files or requirements in terms of cover design. All quoted costings above may vary depending on an individual project. Costings will be confirmed with
the author in advance of any work being undertaken.
